The Downtown Barrie BIA Board of Management is holding an election to fill seven (7) vacancies on its Board of Management to fulfill a four-year term, ending December 31, 2031. Final approval of the appointments will be made by the City of Barrie Council.

MEMBER DEFINITION: – Membership of the BIA consists of persons who are assessed for commercial taxes, on the last assessment roll, with respect to commercial rateable property in the designated BIA area, or tenants of an assessed commercial property within the BIA boundary. 

MEMBER ELIGIBILITY: Those eligible to stand for election include persons who are assessed for commercial taxes, on the last assessment roll, with respect to commercial rateable property in the designated BIA area, or nominees of persons so assessed, or tenants of an assessed commercial property within the BIA boundary, or nominees of tenants of an assessed commercial property within the BIA boundary.

ELECTION PROCESS  & KEY DATES:

NOMINATION DEADLINE: Friday, October 9, 2026 at 4:30 PM EST

– Candidate Profiles and Eligibility Certificate Packages shall be filed in writing to the BIA office by 4:30 PM EST on Friday, October 9, 2026. Each nominee shall provide a headshot and a short biography of up to 500 words by email to [email protected] along with their Eligibility Certificate.

– If there are seven (7) or fewer nominees: the slate will be declared acclaimed.

 – If there are fewer than seven (7) nominees: The nomination period will be extended by two weeks and close on Friday, October 23, 2026 for the remaining nominee positions, not including the acclaimed nominees.

 – If the remaining nominee positions are filled, or not: the entire slate will be declared acclaimed.

 – If there are more than the remaining nominee positions: An election package will be delivered to Members on Monday, October 26, 2026 for those remaining positions (not including the acclaimed nominees). The BIA will send out one periodical advising the membership of who is standing for election with a revised election period.

 – If there are more than seven (7) nominees: An election package will be delivered to Members on Friday, October 16, 2026, if not earlier, for distribution,. The BIA will send out one periodical, advising the membership of who is standing for election.  

ELECTION PERIOD:

 – Monday, October 26, 2026 at 8:30 AM EST up to and including Friday, October 30, 2026 at 4:30 PM EST

 – Votes must be made in person at the BIA office during normal business hours (Monday to Friday 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM EST). Ballots that are mailed must be received by  Friday, October 30, 2026, at 4:30 PM EST. Faxed or emailed votes will not be accepted.
 
– Only one vote will be allowed per member, by secret ballot, in person at the BIA office, or by mail.  

The new 2027 Board of Management will be announced on Friday, October 30, 2026, subject to Council approval.
