Downtown Barrie Reopens After Ice Storm: A Testament to Community Resilience

Tuesday, April 8, 2025

Barrie, ON – Downtown Barrie is open for business once again following the recent ice storm that left much of the area without power for several days. While the storm caused significant disruption—toppling trees and downing power lines—our community’s resilience was undeniable. Neighbours, friends, and families came together to support one another, staying safe, warm, and connected.

Many downtown businesses experienced power outages lasting anywhere from three to five days, resulting in lost inventory and revenue—especially challenging for those still recovering from the impacts of COVID-19. Yet, the spirit of collaboration and creativity among our local businesses remained strong.

One shining example is Homestead Artisan Bakery, which donated perishable goods to Stone Horse Farm in Innisfil to help feed livestock, prevent waste and support a fellow local enterprise.

“This initiative reflects our commitment to community, sustainable farming, and reducing waste,” said Cait Patrick and Lise Garden, co-owners of Homestead Artisan Bakery. “Our goal is to build strong relationships with local food entrepreneurs and support regenerative agriculture.”

Homestead began as a vendor at the Barrie Farmers’ Market and continues to participate every Saturday, while also operating a growing café and bakery at 80 Dunlop Street East.

Downtown Barrie’s business community is made up of passionate, creative, and community-minded individuals—our friends, families, and neighbours. Now more than ever, your support matters.
