Downtown Barrie Business Association (BIA) Initiates ‘A Greener Future’

The annual Butt Blitz event is spearheaded across Canada by A Greener Future, with a 2017 goal to pick up 200,000 butts nationally. Barrie’s 2016 contribution was 7,475 and this year’s objective is 10,000. 4.5 trillion butts are discarded each year globally.

BIA Board member and ZuZu Fashion Boutique owner Tracey Baker is serving as the Downtown Volunteer Coordinator for the event. She has reached out to downtown businesses and has received overwhelming support for the community initiative.

Downtown businesses can get involved directly by picking up all the butts on their own sidewalk and in the street from 11:00am to 2:00pm on Saturday, May 6th. All that they need to bring is a pair of gardening gloves; an event kit will be provided and will include:

  • Clear bags
  • Event rack card
  • Window clings

These items may be picked up at ZuZu on May 4th and 5th at 25 Dunlop Street East.

Furthermore, as a result of a creative partnership, business owners can encourage their customers, clients, staff and others to ‘butt out’ in newly installed Terracycle receptacles; 23 of which were purchased by The City of Barrie and installed by The Downtown Barrie Business Association (BIA) on store-fronts around the downtown core.

As part of the A Greener Future program, the collected butts are ultimately recycled into plastic shipping pallets.
