Downtown Barrie and its Waterfront

Tuesday, July 23, 2019

Here we are about halfway through our summer and the temperature of Kempenfelt Bay is nearing perfection for enjoying the warm days lakeside with the sunshine and warmth casting a glow all along Barrie’s beautiful waterfront. We often take for granted our 10 kilometres of pristine, natural waterfront and its countless attractions including 5+ beaches, parks, marinas, public art installations, exercise stations, deep historic roots and more.

Johnson’s Beach along the Northshore is quietly tucked away in Barrie’s beautiful east end with towering trees and charming neighbourhoods. It’s here where you might witness the quiet excitement of an evening Barrie Yacht Club sailboat race. Heading west toward downtown Barrie, make sure to hit up the many natural lookouts with gorgeous views of sparkling Kempenfelt Bay. As you enter the downtown, you’ll come across the first of six fitness stations right next to where many paddle boarders launch. Tighten your shoelaces and add some strength training to your journey. If you need a rest, there are some incredible public art installations including the Sea Serpent at Heritage Park and Barrie’s famous Spirit Catcher both created by artist Ron Baird.

Heading to our most westerly point, take the boardwalk past Barrie’s Marina and into Centennial Beach where you’ll find clean beach water, lifeguards, paddle boats, boards and kayak rentals along with a one-of-a-kind floating amusement park. Cool off from the mist of the beautiful water fountain as you head south on this vehicle-free, full accessible pedestrian path. The Southshore Centre is the original location of Barrie’s Roundhouse back when Barrie was a major rail hub. Now home to the Barrie Rowing Club, this beautiful building neighbours the well-respected and newly complete Military Park.

Continue along the path to charming Minet’s Point which completes your journey along Barrie’s sparkling waterfront. From here, take a deep breath and gaze across the bay to where you began your journey. Now head back to our bustling downtown for an easy afternoon checking out the 400+ shops, restaurants, services and beautiful venues we have to offer.
