Tuesday, March 11, 2025

Downtown Barrie’s female entrepreneurs shone brightly at the recent Barrie Chamber of Commerce Women in Business Awards Gala, reaffirming the strength and impact of women-led businesses in our community. Downtown Barrie is home to over 300 businesses, nearly 50% of which are owned and operated by local women—our friends, family, and neighbors who play a vital role in shaping our vibrant downtown.

This year, two outstanding Downtown Barrie business owners were recognized as finalists and winners in their respective award categories:

– Laura Fess, owner and operator of VOX Mental Health on Owen Street, was awarded the ‘Healthcare Hero’ award for her exemplary service in local healthcare. As an attachment and trauma-informed therapist with over a decade of experience, Laura works with individuals, families, and couples to navigate life’s challenges. Her holistic approach considers history, family, experiences, location, and cultural expressions. Through evidence-based interventions, she provides clients with the tools to process their needs and develop strategies for well-being in a judgment-free environment.

– Candice Thomas, owner and CEO of Evergreen Massage Therapy & Wellness Studio on Collier Street, received the ‘Entrepreneur’ award, recognizing her outstanding entrepreneurial mindset, operational excellence, and community outreach. As the founder of The Liv Mohr Project, Candice is dedicated to transforming women’s healthcare, particularly in maternal mental health. Evergreen Wellness Studio bridges the gap between physical and psychological health, offering collaborative, innovative care. Her advocacy efforts have raised over $50,000 for Perinatal Mental Health services in Barrie, ensuring timely access to care for mothers. A proud mother of two daughters, Olivia and Ada, Candice is inspiring future changemakers through her work and leadership.

“As a director of the Downtown Barrie BIA and a multi-business owner, I see firsthand the invaluable contributions women make to our economic landscape. They are leaders, creators, and nurturers of our incredible downtown community. Congratulations to Laura and Candice!” said Heather Kennedy, owner of Blueberry Moon, Hey Bootsy, and Kennedy’s Grocery Store.

The Downtown Barrie BIA Board of Management extends heartfelt congratulations to both Laura and Candice for their well-deserved recognition. Their leadership and dedication not only exemplify excellence in business but also contribute to the growth and well-being of our entire community.
