Memorial Square & Meridian Place Grand Openings

Memorial Square Grand Opening – Friday, June 29th, 2018 at 10:30am

The Downtown Barrie Business Association (BIA) is honoured to be working with CFB Borden, the Barrie Legion, Grey Simcoe Foresters and the City of Barrie on the placement of the sacred soil of Vimy Ridge in the new memorial monument that was part of the Memorial Square expansion.

Currently resting in an urn held securely in City Hall, this soil is symbolic of the Canadian soldiers who fought in the Battle of Vimy Ridge in 1917. The Memorial Square Grand Opening will see the soil laid to rest in a dedicated memorial monument next to the repositioned cenotaph.

Memorial Square recognizes our fallen veterans and supports our military heritage. The expansion of Memorial Square created a ten times larger footprint. The space will be able to accommodate larger ceremonial procedures as well as host the ever-increasing public who attend each event.

The Memorial Square Grand Opening ceremony begins at 10:30am on Friday, June 29th, 2018.

Meridian Place Grand Opening – Friday, June 29th, 2018 at 5:00pm

Great things have arrived! The Downtown Barrie Business Association (BIA) and the City of Barrie are thrilled to announce the highly anticipated grand opening of Meridian Place.

“Meridian Credit Union works together arm-in-arm with our local communities towards shared goals and a vision of the future,” said Wade Stayzer, Chief Member Experience Officer, Meridian. “This iconic and historical place has been completely transformed into a grand destination landmark for all of Simcoe County. We are proud and honoured to be an integral part of it.”

Meridian Place will be the event epicentre and the heart of Downtown Barrie. Programmed for festivals, events, concerts, plays, activities and more, this space will truly be a community connection site.

Betty Lillow and Bonnie Carter of the Outdoor Performance Centre Association commented that they, “…received a Molson Community Fund grant in 2003 with the intent of putting it towards a project like this. After countless meetings spanning 15 years and several different incarnations of the project, it is exciting to see this beautiful performance centre and gathering place established in our downtown.”

Come out and enjoy the ribbon cutting, cake cutting, tours of the new venue and live music featuring Sonic Coalition and the Fred Grant Squares.

The Meridian Place Grand Opening celebrations begin at 5:00pm on Friday, June 29th, 2018.
