Downtown Barrie Receives Award for Meridian Place & Memorial Square Development

The Downtown Barrie Business Association (BIA) is pleased to announce that they have received the esteemed award for Large Scale Public Realm Investment & Streetscape for the Meridian Place & Memorial Square development. Presented by the Ontario Business Improvement Area Association (OBIAA) at the National BIA Conference that was held from April 15th to April 18th, these awards recognize the most successful efforts in Ontario BIA development.

OBIAA represents BIAs across Ontario including over 60,000 local businesses. In an effort to effectively contribute to the social, economic and cultural well-being of communities, BIAs find support and encouragement from OBIAA.
Craig Stevens, Executive Director of Downtown Barrie’s BIA said that “This has been a truly successful public-private partnership between the City of Barrie and The Downtown Barrie Business Association (BIA) and to be recognized in this way by the Ontario BIA Association is really fantastic.”

OBIAA recognizes those BIAs who showcase innovation and a vision that has made a difference in their communities and this is why The Downtown Barrie Business Association (BIA) is so honored to receive the award all the while appreciating that it was a large team effort.

“I have to admit I am proud of all the work and time that has been put into the transformation of Memorial Square and Meridian Place. There have been numerous partnerships to get this project done and in particular, I would like to thank Base Borden, Barrie Legion and the Grey Simcoe Forrester’s with their support of the Memorial Square expansion,” said Wayne Hay, Chair of Downtown Barrie’s BIA.

Mayor Jeff Lehman was also excited about the news and had this to say about the Downtown Barrie BIA receiving the award: “For this to be an award-winning project before it’s even completed is truly incredible. Great cities have great public spaces and this square is going to be the heart of the City in many ways. The City may be managing this project but it’s the Downtown Barrie BIA and the generous donors who are supporting it financially that made it happen, and deserve our thanks.”
